About this Item

A not only rare but unique copy of the first edition, first printing of Sondheim's stunning creation of "Pacific Overtures," with music and lyrics by Sondheim, Book by John Weidman, additional material by Huge Wheeler, originally produced and directed on Broadway by Harold Prince, illustrated with a drawing by Al Hirschfield, and several pages of B & W photographs from the original production. Despite Sondheim's reference to "Overtures" in the the tipped in letter to "Barbara" as a "flop musical," it is now considered to be one of Sondheim's most impressive achievements, the more so for being incredibly difficult to cast and perform. This copy is close to fine, binding clean and tight, one slightly rubbed edge and onr small bump on the lower edge; the DJ is whole, unchipped and unclipped, but with a bit of wrinkling along the upper front edge. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing with the number line beginning with "1". Inscribed on the front endpaper by Sondheim to "Barbara" (Barbara Cook?), "To Barbara -- Who put up with more in a single day than we had to to get this show on -- With love and gratitude, Steve." In addition, there is a tipped in letter to "Barbara" in an envelope on Stephen Sondheim stationery, "July 25, 1977, "Dear Barbara - I knew Flora was cheap, but surely she can afford to buy a manila envelope large enough to contain a flop musical. As a result, I'm giving it to Scrooge herself this afternoon in the hopes she will remember to bring it to you tomorrow. If not, she'll hear from our lawyers. With love, Steve." Taken together this inscribed book and tipped in letter is not only a rarity, it is a unique article of theatre memorabilia.
