About this Item

With the Replies of The Rev. S. H. Tyng, Rev. E. H. Canfield, Rev. John Cotton Smith, (and) Rev. W. A. Muhlenberg. New York, 1865. Octavo, printed wrappers. 133 pages. A very good copy. Name in pencil at top of cover is that of Malcolm Douglass, noted Episcopalian minister and popular rector of several New England churches. Douglass established such an impressive reputation that his fellow clergy urged him to become bishop of their diocese, but he declined out of modesty. Each of the constituent replies is printed on different paper, and each has its own title page (or what appears to be a half-title), indicating that these replies and the original pastoral letter may have been circulated separately at first and gathered together here with a new cover and general title page. The controversy involved the liturgical legality of holding a Greek Orthodox service in Trinity Chapel, which Bishop Potter condoned , but only in the sense of lending the chapel for the service at a time when it was not being used by its own congregation.
