Initially a two volume set, this set has been enlarged to five volumes by the insertion of the following: 204 engravings, including 34 very distinguished color plates. 148 portraits, including 19 colored impressions. 11 autograph letters, including ones by Victor Hugo, Count díOrsay, Lord Leighton, and the first half of a letter by De Quincey to his publisher on literary matters, mentioning Malthus. Also inserted are 7 autographs: Cardinal Newman, Lord Palmerston, Lord Beaconsfield, Charles Dickens, William Beckford, Lord Lytton, and Dante Rosetti, as well as a note to David Garrick, endorsed by him in his handwriting. Four original water-color drawings further enhance this very special extra-illustrated set.
