About this Item
Oblong quarto measuring 11.5" x 9". String-tied flexible brown leather with stamped decorations. Contains 426 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1"x 1" and 5" x 7" with captions. Very good album with chips, tears, and some detached but present pages with very good or better photographs. A photo album compiled by a Naval family in the late 1920s and early 1930s during trips to around the world from Tahiti, Australia, and England to America and many more places by an upper class English family. The album appears to have been kept by a naval man and his family as there are numerous photos of men in uniform and ships at sea. It is not kept in chronological order and jumps around from various trips that include numerous countries visited over roughly a ten year period. They open with a large photo captioned, "home of W.M. Reid in Tahiti in mid-1920s." Other photos show a nude man diving into a grotto, native Tahitians, and the landscape. The photos are better than average amateur photography which includes lounging nude women on the beach, various sun rise and sun set images, and straw huts on the island. One section of photos shows a garden party with wealthy patrons in white frocks being served by Tahitians captioned "the help." Another image from this event shows Tahitians entertaining the group with the caption, "they love to dance and sing." From Tahiti they traveled to Bora Bora in 1931 where they went sailing, visited gardens, and hiked around the island. Photos from Australia include images from a ranch with men on horseback posing for the camera, "Australian aboriginals," and the landscape of the country. Many photos show the passengers and crews of various vessels they were abroad. One image of a uniformed crew member reads, "he was only a boy of a captain, but oh, such a man!" A page at the end of the album is from a World War I camp in Adelaide with images captioned "Cheer up Girls at Armistice Thanksgiving," "sham fight manoeuvers," and "Adelaide Oval Peace Celebrations." An extensive collection of unique travel photographs documenting the journeys of a world traveling family in the 1920s. Seller Inventory # 413912
