About this Item

Description:

A collection of approximately 125 gelatin silver prints of various sizes, including "panoramic" landscape views comprised of two, three, or four prints taped together on the versos. The photographs are neatly laid into paper-cut corner slits on loose paper quarto leaves measuring (9" x 12"). The sheets of photographs were removed from a file folder labeled "Knox County Studies, 1930s". One sheet is headed in pencil "Knox Co. material" and another sheet has an autograph note written in pencil on verso, else none of the individual photos are captioned. A few intermittent leaves have moderate foxing at the edges and scattered short tears and chips, very good overall. A remarkable assemblage of landscape views of rural hamlets and farms set in surrounding hillsides and mountains, including what must be sections of the Cumberland River in Knox County in Appalachia, Kentucky. The collection features images of white families and residents out and about their farm houses and various crops, including a large gathering of residents attending a "Swan Pond 4H Club" outdoor event. Swan Pond is both a pond and hamlet located just south of Barbourville. Also included are several images of a major flood in what must be downtown Barbourville. A contemporary autograph note on the verso of one leaf reads in part: "The more self-reliant, the more religious. The more intelligent the religious, the less overt the emoting: but the emotions are deeper, richer, and better, and find an outlet through kindness, goodness ." An intriguing, terrific collection of photos documenting a remote part of Appalachia in Kentucky during the years of the Great Depression. Seller Inventory # 576533
