About this title

Photographs that have made history as well as recorded it, such as the notorious execution of a Viet Cong suspect in Saigon, are gathered and discussed in a powerful collection of graphic images

From Library Journal:

Here is a simple concept, beautifully presented: 51 carefully selected and well-reproduced images, with one-page essays telling the story of each. The sole criterion is that these photographs have somehow shaped our thinking about ourselves and this medium. Beginning with 13 important 19th-century images, we proceed in roughly chronological order up to the Challenger explosion. Some pictures fill us with optimism, such as Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Many more have to do with war, poverty, and man's potential for inhumanity: Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother," Lewis Hine's "Child Spinner" in a southern textile mill, Anne Frank's self-portrait, Bourke-White's 1945 photo of Buchenwald survivors, the bombing of Guernica, the first atomic bomb explosion at Los Alamos, the 1970 shooting at Kent State. Recommended for photohistory and journalism collections.
