Small Octavo. 380 pages; frontispiece, illustrations, maps. Enoch Conklin toured Southern Arizona in 1877 (as Martha Sandweiss suggests may have been accompanied by a company photographer). The images captured on glass plate negatives are the basis for the many engravings in the book. Conklin was encouraged by early Territorial entrepreneurs since they knew the spectacular scenery would bring tourists (especially with the railroad which was being built and came into operation in 1879). He writes: "Whether you be a miner in search of miners, a farmer in search of fertile valleys, or a tourists or scientist in search of the beauties of nature" this is the place for you. The idea that thought it was very hot, the dry heat made in bearable. It also led to this being recommended by doctors in the east for patients with lung problems especially tuberculosis. Bound in Brown pictorial cloth lettered and stamped in gilt, Light wear to spine ends and corners, slight toning to page edges. A very nice, clean copy. Bookseller Inventory #
