About this Item
'The Pilgrim' is an analysis of the reign of possibly the most famous historical English monarch, King Henry VIII. The work was was written by William Thomas, who was a clerk of the council to Edward VI. Thomas was a strong defender of the character of Henry VIII, and wrote this volume after his death. It was, however, never published in English, only in Italian, as Thomas was living in Italy at the time. The Victorian historian James Anthony Froude found the one handwritten copy in a museum, and subsequently sought to finally publish it hundreds of years after it had been written. This was after his work on his famous work 'History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada'. Froud was a historian and editor of 'Fraser's Magazine', changing his career after aspiring to become a clergyman. In the original half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Institutional label to the front board, 'Queenstown, Cathcarts Library, Cape of Good Hope', with some loss to the label due to rubbing. Light rubbing to the boards and to the extremities, being heavier to the rear extremity, resulting in loss of leather. Rubbing to the tail of the spine has resulted in a little loss, with a small mark to the spine also. Rubbing to the front board has resulted in some loss to the paper near to the joint. Institutional stamps to the front pastedown. Blind stamp to the endpapers, visible through to the first and last few pages. Front hinge starting with cords showing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd mark. Good. Seller Inventory # 619P1
