About this title

Mitchell Stone Jr. is a country boy from a small, racially segregated community in Memphis, Tennessee, transplanted into the culture shock of the Southside of 1960 Chicago. Feelings of indifference and alienation from family, a new environment, and gangs propel him on a journey through life beyond imagination. Stone's quest for defining his identity leads him to the rice paddies of Vietnam, into an underworld existence in the fast-paced game of international street life as a career criminal, pimp, drug dealer, heroin addict, and hustler, to become a recovering addict and a successful manager within corporate America. A Place for Me tells the fictitious account of actual events, experiences, observations, and the creative imagination that author Colby Chase based on twenty years of street credits, twenty years in corporate America, and twenty-three years free of heroin addiction by way of a spiritual experience through involvement in Twelve Step programs. A story of both defeat and triumph, this novel narrates the miracle of change in one man's experiences of being lost and then found.

From the Author:

This is my first published book. Most of the people that come from the lifestyle that I do don't make it to where I am in my life today. So I know beyond any shadow of a doubt just how fortunate I truly am. And I also know how I owe so much to so many that didn't make it out, and to those that are going to get stuck traveling down that path today. My book is all of their voices as well as my own, for many of them lived and died without their stories ever being told. I found it so exhilarating writing this semi-autobiographical novel of the different times, experiences, people, places and things of my life's journey that I have begun a second book. The new book, like my first book, focuses on my very favorite era in time. "The sixties summer of love," and all that went with those times--expanding of the consciousness through mood or mind altering substances, the hippies, sex/free love, and the revolution of the counterculture as best described by Timothy Leary's classic statement, "tune in turn on tune out." There was so much going on then on so many levels. Just to name a few; the Vietnam War, civil rights, women's rights, riots, Martin Luther King, Robert and John Kennedy assignations, and the Patty Hearst kidnapping. While living in, around, and through it all--drugs, money and sex fueled my passions to a point--that I somehow seemed to live outside of it all. These were mind blowing, psychedelic and seemingly fun times. Yet, for many troubled souls, like mine, there was utter devastation and desolation of our lives and psyches. That's what I remember most in looking back at it all. So why was it my very favorite time of my life, you might ask. Because unbeknownst to me at that time, the very foundation and appreciation I have for life today spawned from my experiences--good and not so good--that I had back then. Both my first book and the second book I'm working on serve as portals into what my daughter terms as, "ancient history about my days of decadence."
