About this Item
Professor Ivanov's work, which won him a Lenin Prize in 1961, is the first to deal exclusively with the Pogonophora, a group of invertebrates of high systematic rank in whose structure some of the essential features of the primitive Deuterostomia have been presented. The first information on a specimen of this group appeared 1914 but only within the last decade have been collected in sufficient numbers for systematic study. Our knowledge of the group is founded upon the research carried out by Professor A. V. Ivanov. After the publication of his monograph in 1960, research redoubled, new species have come to light, and much more is known of their biology. Inclusion of this new material in the English edition has produced a book which is half as long again as the original. Fifteen new species are described here for the first time. New taxa: Siboglinum subligatum n. sp., Siboglinum concinnum n. sp., Siboglinum arabicum n. sp., Siboglinum silone n. sp., Siboglinum ceylonicum n. sp., Siboglinum exile n. sp., Siboglinum sumatrense n. sp., Siboglinum zanzibaricum n. sp., Siboglinum sergeevi n. sp., Siboglinum lacteum n. sp., Diplobrachia southwardae n. sp., Lamelisabella minuta n. sp. 479 pp., 176 figs, hardcover gr. 8 [with dust jacket] [English translation of the Russian edition].
