Title: Politics of violence: From Ayodhya to ...
Publisher: Sage
Publication Date: 1996
Condition: Very Good
About this title
`Ayodha, the town in Uttar Pradesh where Hindu fanatics destroyed the Babri Masjid mosque in December 1992, claiming it to be built on the site of the god Ram′s birthplace, marked a violent watershed in Indian politics. The destruction was followed by anti-Muslim riots in various parts of the country. Behrampada, the less familiar placename in the title of this collection of nineteen papers, refers to a muslim ghetto in Bombay which was one of the worst hit. Fortuitously, a film crew was nearby and was able to record both the violence and the subsequent impact on the lives of the inhabitants. Three papers deal with the making of the film and offer an analysis of what actually happened in Behrampada. Other papers contain eyewitness accounts of the impact of Ayodhya in different parts of India; the remainder take a more distanced, academic view of the context within which the violence occured.′ - Asian Affairs
