About this Item
The mischievous Scottish MP, Sir William Young Darling, published five books anonymously - all purporting, on the surface, to be something they were not. I'm not sure how many readers were taken in by this sequence of essays supposedly written by a bookseller who fails miserably at his business - but it was all from Sir William's imagination. There was a sequel in 1939, "The Bankrupt Bookseller Speaks Again", and an omnibus edition appeared under his own name in 1947. Cape issued a new edition in their Travellers' Library series in 1936. First published in 1931, this copy is the third edition - the first cheap edition (3/6) - from November 1932. There's a frontispiece cartoon by "BATT" (Oswald Charles Barrett). Some browning to edges and endpapers, but internally crisp, clean and well bound. There's a little wear to edges of the boards, but this is a very good copy indeed in a very good dust jacket indeed, complete and undamaged apart from minor wear at extremities, a slightly browned spine panel and some internal strengthening at head of spine. An excellent copy of a scarce book. MC. Seller Inventory # 002760
