About this Item
[1832] American Tract Society (New York), 4 3/8 x 7 1/8 inches tall full leather bound, gilt lettered leather label to spine, illustrated with engravings by Alexander Anderson, [4], 404 pp. Date derived from addresses listed in individual tracts for the ATS, 87 and 144 Nassau Street, which the Society occupied from its inception in 1825 through 1832. Slight soiling and moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers, with mild bumping to tips and chipping to the spine label. Many pages have mild to moderate foxing and creasing and some marginal soiling. Front and rear blank free-endpapers are both only partly attached, but the volume is quite solidly bound. Otherwise, a good to very good copy, complete, of this scarce collection. ~I~ [1.5P] A collection of the first 33 tracts issued by the now-inconic American Tract Society. Although the tracts were also issued separately, the gathering and signing of this volume indicate that they were composed and printed as a single unit for this one-volume publication, likely from the stereotype plates of the individual tracts. Each of the tracts has separate paging on the outer corners, and through-numbering on the inner margins. The American Tract Society (ATS) is a nonprofit, nonsectarian but evangelical organization founded on May 11, 1825, in New York City for the purpose of publishing and disseminating tracts of Christian literature.
