About this title

The Quitter is a collection of 16 narratives, each one centred on a pastime, hobby, sport or pursuit that the author tried to take up and master. It follows a hilarious and pathetic path through competitive croquet, gun collecting, ice fishing, dirt biking and alternative medicine, among others, as he seeks to fill the void created in his life when he gave up playing rock music at the age of thirty.

About the Author:

Alex Mortimer spent most of the late nineteen eighties to mid-nineties touring with rock bands and making records. In the late nineties he released two spoken-word recordings, contributed to various CBC Radio music, cultural and sports shows, and also wrote a column in Ottawa Xpress for several years. In 2004 he released a solo musical recording, Songs From The Colonies. In 2005 he won the Duncan Campbell Scott essay contest for a chapter in The Quitter about learning the craft of carnival weight guessing. He currently works in Ottawa and lives in the hills north of the city. This is his first book.
