Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Economic History of Ireland in the Seventeenth Century The economic history of Ireland in the seventeenth century may be divided into well-defined periods. The beginning Of the century was marked by a complete breakdown Of the whole economic life of the country, after which the industrial organization had to be built up anew from the foundations. The last quarter Of the sixteenth century witnessed a de/va s-t tating war in Ireland, in the course Of which property Of all kinds was deliberately and ruthlessly destroyed. It is not necessary for the purposes Of this book to go into the vexed question of the type of social and economic life which English policy set itself to destroy; that is a matter on which competent historians have expressed strongly difiering views; and it wouldbe presumption for the present author to express any opinion on the subject without having made an independent investiga tion. It is sufficient to say that, whatever was the condition or quality of that earlier Irish agricultural and industrial organisation, whether it was, as some have suggested, complex and highly developed, or, as others have asserted, primitive and semi-barbarous, it was utterly and completely destroyed in the closing quarter of the sixteenth century. Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from The Economic History of Ireland in the Seventeenth Century I wish to express my gratitude to Mr. P. S. O Hegarty, who was good enough to read and suggest some alterations in the manuscript of a section of the first chapter; to Father T. A. Finlay, S.J., for his great kindness in revising the manuscript, and in assisting me to correct the proofs; and to Mr. Arthur Cox, who also gave me much assistance with the proofs. The index was compiled by Mr. E. A. Phelps, to whom I am much obliged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
