About this Item

Small 4to. Blue cloth, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. 164pp. Frontispiece. Fine/near fine. Handsome first edition of these seven essays by noted Civil War historians, plus a bibliography of Wiley's writings. This copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a 7½" X 4" envelope (signed by Wiley at upper left and with recipient name/address in his hand) bearing a superb Autograph Letter Signed from him, 2pp (single leaf), 7¼" X 10½", New York, NY, 1962 March 14. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "The Hotel Roosevelt" letterhead (and matching envelope), Wiley chats cordially with this officer of the New York Civil War Round Table, agreeing to help out the judging of a Civil War manuscript award ("if it doesn't require reading more than about three manuscripts and if I have some time leeway in doing the reading"). He also asks an interesting favor of Gates: "As a memento of last night's meeting I should like so much to have an inscribed copy of one of Marie Sandoz' books -- preferably Old Jules; her hostess, Miss McGuire said that if through you I'd get a copy to her, she'd have it inscribed. If you could, without undue trouble, pick up a copy of Old Jules, pay for it (& let me reimburse you for book & postage) & get it to Miss McGuire for the Sandoz inscription, I'd be most grateful." Boldly signed. Wiley (1906-80), a noted Southern historian, chronicled the Civil War and the role of the everyday soldier in such classics as "The Life of Johnny Reb" (1943), "The Life of Billy Yank" (1952), "They Fought for the Union" (1949) and others.
