About this Item
First Edition. Hardcover. According to Wikipedia, Emil Gustav Hirsch (1851-1923) was a Luxembourg-born Jewish American biblical scholar, Reform rabbi, contributing editor to numerous articles of The Jewish Encyclopedia (1906), and founding member of the NAACP. For forty-two years (1880 1923), he served as the rabbi of Chicago Sinai Congregation, one of the oldest synagogues in the Midwest. At this post, he became well known for an emphasis on social justice. From Chicago Sinai's pulpit, he delivered sermons on the social ills of the day. Hirsch was appointed professor of rabbinical literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago in 1892, and he also served on the Chicago Public Library board from 1885 to 1897. He was an influential exponent of Reform Judaism and published a number of articles for the Reform Advocate, a weekly journal which he edited for thirty years. This volume was produced posthumously by the Chicago Sinai Congregation. It includes an dedication poem about Hirsch by Dora Hirsch, and 20 sermons by Hirsch given on various topics, including Judaism, Christianity, and social justice. Octavo. Blue paper-covered boards with gilt title to front cover and spine. Minor wear and bumping to edges of boards, with small smudges to front cover. Pages are generally bright and clean, with foxing to edges and front and rear pastedowns. 382 pages. Judaic Studies. JUD310051. Seller Inventory # 9355
