The author, a firm believer in the Midwest, was an ardent advocate of improving the Mississippi River and was asked by Congress in 1877 to write an extended memorial on that subject. "Resources of Missouri" was widely used by the state board of immigration to acquaint prospective residents with the advantages of the state.
