Rolf Knie's exhibition at The Oriental in Singapore, June 13 - 23, 1996, sponsored by Credit Suisse and Winterthur Insurance. "It is an exceptional moment in my life, and I regard it as a great privilege, to have the opportunity of presenting my work at the Singapore Festival of the Arts. My deep respect and warm thanks belong to all the public representatives who made this event possible for me. At the same time I am immensely grateful to the private companies and persons who supported me throughout. Without them, I am very conscious of this, I might never have arrived here at all. With my first art exhibition in Asia, an influence comes to the surface of my artistic development that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember: In the highly prestigious, traditional environment of our family's Swiss National Circus, experiencing and understanding the elementary energies of wild animals, working with them and finding ways of expressing their proud characters, has become a culture of its own. I grew up in the midst of these spectacular achievements, had my share in their success, but I was always aware of the truth that we were building upon the collective knowledge of endless generations of artists from all continents. In my paintings, however, European techniques and perspectives are naturally predominant. We all stand in traditions we should try to recognize and appreciate, and then develop with all our talents. But how do we, for example, cope with the fact that the tiger, symbol of Eastern strength, has long gained an importance all of its own in Western culture and is deeply rooted in the minds of the people? There are many wonderful links between the surface; and if it is true that the heart talks in a thousand languages, some of the warmth and vitality I experienced so often during my many stays in the "Far East", will certainly be reflected on my canvases, and hopefully open many gates in the Eastern world for an inspiring dialogue between us - and our common understanding of the eternal qualities of life. Again, with deepest thanks to my friends and all the celebrities who made this exhibition possible." - from the preliminary Dear Friends and Art Lovers.by Rolf Knie, Singapore, June 1996.
