About this Item
[book is only a bit shelfworn, but has a large blank ink spot on the fore-edge which has bled into the edge of about a hundred pages (although not far enough to affect any text), and the former owner's initials plus date & place of purchase in ink along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath the rear jacket flap); the jacket shows wear at the edges and extremities, with a short closed tear and some associated creasing at the bottom edge of the front panel, a triangular piece torn away from the lower corner of the rear panel (no loss of text), and a few internal tape-mends]. From the Foreword: "This book is in no sense a biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is rather a critical account of that episode in American politics known as the New Deal. As to the President, it is an account of an image projected upon the popular mind which came to be known as Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is the author's conviction that this image did not at all correspond to the man himself and that it is now time to correct the lineaments of this synthetic figure created by highly intelligent propaganda, aided by mass illusion and finally enlarged and elaborated out of all reason by the fierce moral and mental disturbances of the war." Flynn was a prominent anti-Roosevelt figure of his day; a founder of the isolationist America First Committee (which campaigned against U.S. involvement in World War II), and later a big fan of Senator Joseph McCarthy's red-hunting, he once called New Deal progressivism a "degenerate form of socialism and debased form of capitalism." In other words, he'd be right at home in today's Republican Party. The rear jacket panel carries an ad for the Conservative Book Club. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this slightly heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****.
