About this Item
Neither publisher nor date is given and I've so far been unable to trace either but internal evidence suggests mid 1950s to possibly early 1960s - one of the later plans includes an outline of the "Maasvlakte project" (the extension of Europoort and built during the 1960s on land reclaimed from the sea) while an image on the same sheet shows Ossip Zadkine's "De Verwoerte Stad" which was created in 1951-1953 before being erected on site. There is an introduction by the burgemeester of Rotterdam, signed in ink, but the name is not printed and the signature is indecipherable. Large folio, 385x530mm, and consisting of 21 separate sheets (giving 4pp each, folio) folded and loosely gathered in a case of yellow cloth gilt stamped covered boards with flaps, almost in the form of a solander case. This is copy number 59 of 1,000 numbered copies. The contents are complete and in very good condition but the case is cracked along the main hinges with some associated tears and with a couple of the flaps partially torn on the hinge areas; there are also some scuffing or other marks, the bookplate of Hull Reference Library at the front and discreet library stamps on a very few pages. The book is a pictorial history of the port of Rotterdam beginning with its early origins indicated here through the reproduction of a1568 map by Michele Tramezzino through to the most recent images mentioned above, some photographic in black and white and others being colour reproductions of old maps and prints. It's an interesting and colourful volume charting the growth of what's become perhaps Europe's foremost port from its origins as a small seaside village. NOTE that on account of the items size and weight (approaching 3.5kg) the default carriage costs will not apply and a supplementary charge will be needed, the amount depending on the destination and on the form of carriage agreed. More InformationBooks are priced individually and those prices do not include shipping costs or insurance. Books can also be collected, by arrangement.
The shipping matrix is, and can only be, a very rough guide to postage costs being based, as it is, on a base weight of 1kg (2.2lbs), with the additional book bringing that weight up to a maximum of 2Kg and with the package as a whole fitting in to the "small parcel" criterion of height + width + depth not exceeding 90cm and with no single side longer than 60cm (which certainly covers ordinary books, of course).
In consequence, postage costs may be less or more than estimated in that matrix but will always be charged at whatever rate Royal Mail has come up with at the time. We'll also seek to minimise postal charges by packing two or more books together or by using carriers for larger consignments, as appropriate. As for compensation for loss or damage in transit, Royal Mail has quietly reduced the amounts that can be claimed to £20.00 in general but additional insurance can be had and we'll let you know how much that will be where necessary.
