1766 gab es zwölf Gruben im Saarrevier. Sieben Jahre später förderten bereits 141 Bergleute 21000 t Steinkohle aus 45 Stollen. 1769 war auf fürstliche Anweisung mit der "Bruderbüchse" eine erste Sozialkasse eingerichtet worden - ein Vorläufer des Saarbrücker Knappschaftsvereins. Bis 1790 stieg die Jahresförderung auf 50000 t an. Den Beschäftigungshöchststand im Steinkohlenbergbau erreichte das Saarrevier Mitte der 1920er Jahre mit knapp 75000 Mitarbeitern, die höchste Jahresförderung lag im Jahr 1957 bei 16,3 Mio. t.
