About this title

Synopsis:

This is the first history of the Adirondacks by a native Adirondacker. Phelp's manuscript was known but lost for more than one hundred years until it was discovered by Schenectady bookseller Bill Healy who has contributed an introduction and explanatory notes for this publication

About the Author:

Orson Schofield Phelps (1817-1905) was an extraordinary early Adirondack guide who became a legend in his own time thanks to writers like Charles Dudley Warner. "Old Mountain" Phelps, as revealed here in his long-lost manuscript, was a more complex person than the often-portrayed rustic. His observations may cause several chapters of Adirondack history to be rewritten.

Bill Healy divides his working time between selling antiquarian books and exploring and photographing the wild areas of New York State. He has spent most of his life in the book business and for more than a decade sold out-of-print and rare books at Bibliomania, his book shop in Schenectady, New York. His first book, The Adirondacks: A Special World was published in 1986.
