About this title

Synopsis:

(from the jacket) He not only used to be George Murphy, he still is - only now he's playing the most demanding and important role of his colorful career, as the senior U.S. Senator from California. "I guess I don't know anyone who's been mixed up in as many things as I have," he says. "Playing football for Yale, coal mining in Pennsylvania, tool making in Detroit, singing and dancing with entertainers like Judy Garland, so many things..." He fell in love with show business by accident, when he met Julie Henkel. She wanted to be a dancer, and George went along on her rounds. They've been going together ever since, as Mr. and Mrs. Murphy. In the late Twenties and early Thirties, he began hoofing in earnest, on the stage in such hits as Good News, Of Thee I Sing, and Roberta, and in dozens of movie musicals. It was during this period that he became a friend of New York Mayor Jimmy Walker, a coming attraction of political dramas ahead. After World War II, he turned to public relations, and rose to become head man in that department at M.G.M. and Desilu Productions. His co-workers comprised his first constituency; they elected him vice-president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and president of the Screen Actors Guild. In his first attempt at elected public office, he emerged as one of the most popular figures in California history, polling over 3,600,000 votes in defeating Pierre Salinger in the 1964 senatorial election. Since then this "former song and dance man," as he proudly calls himself, has emerged as one of the most important leaders in the Senate. George Murphy's candid life story abounds in anecdotes that name names and offer rich insight into the fascinating worlds of entertainment and politics."Say, Didn't You Used to be George Murphy?" is the autobiography of an authentic star performer- a delightful and revealing account of the American dream come true.
