Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 26" X 19.5". London: Cadell & Davies, 1815. Lovely large 1809 hand colored map of Scandinavia depicts Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Also includes Finland, which was at the time, part of the Kingdom of Sweden. Beautifully detailed throughout, it identifies towns, cities, rivers, lakes, mountains, and other topographical features. Color coded according to regional political boundaries. It originally appeared in "Pinkerton's Modern Atlas." The map is in very good condition with minor toning and wear generally limited to the margins, not affecting the image. John Pinkerton (1758-1826) was a prominent English mapmaker known for his large and impeccably detailed maps. In this manner, his work marks a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. His "Modern Atlas" is one of the best British atlases of the period and is a fine example of his work. Seller Inventory # 322383
