About this title

Synopsis:

This book is a fascinating account of a number of criminal cases in the United States and in the United Kingdom, some of which resulted in wrong convictions. The book is part narrative, part analysis. The analysis, in particular the demolition of the reputation of Whittaker Chambers, ex-spy and idol of many Americans (he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom) will arouse debate and rethinking of the real lessons of the cases. The British cases will shock the complacency of many British people. Both parts are relevant to the current debate on how to deal with Islamic terrorists, whose fanaticism recalls that of the IRA and supporters of Communism. The book includes an analysis of Communism and the way in which its supporters manipulate fact for their own ends

From the Author:

This book is controversial for its conclusions about the guilt or innocence of Alger Hiss and other defendants, but mainly for its critical analysis of the lives and testimony of the informers Whittaker Chambers and Elizabeth Bentley. It shows that the latter were fantasists whose testimony could not be relied on. It also analyses  the book Perjury: the Hiss-Chambers Case by Professor Allen Weinstein, hailed by many as a masterpiece of research, and reveals that it is biased in its treatment of evidence, particularly that  provided by Chambers, and that it needs to be rewritten. This is hot news given the golden reputation of Professor Weinstein as a man with many professorships and awards, until recently the holder of the post of Archivist of the United States.
It also demonstrates that Whittaker Chambers, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and much praised for his books and for his role as a public informer, does not deserve the honour.
Finally, the book shows by examples taken from "political" trials in the United Kingdom that paranoia causes miscarriages of justice, and predicts that this will happen with proceedings against Islamic or other terrorists.
I enjoyed writing the book and have plans to produce a concordance of the works of P.G. Wodehouse, listing the  persons and turns of phrase for the numerous fans who often cannot quite place some of the dialogue or miss the meaning of certain words.
