About this Item

8vo. (226 x 150 mm) viii, [2], 192 pp. Original printed yellow wrappers; edges chipped, a few stains. FIRST EDITION. The first collected edition in German of the five popular lectures on psychosomatics, which were delivered in 1835, 1843 and 1852. These works by the noted Dutch neurologist were posthumously published as this psychiatric monograph. ?Schroeder van der Kolk . . . thought that body and soul interact in the life-force (or 'brain-force'); in the insane the brain-force, rather than the soul (the 'higher principle' in man) is ill. Thus the soul receives wrong data from the nervous-force and consequently reaches a wrong judgement.? [DSB]. Schroeder van der Kolk, a native of Holland, received his M. D. in 1820 for his dissertation on the coagulation of blood. As a practicing physician in Amsterdam, he treated about 400 patients daily. He also performed many postmortem examinations and did much on behalf of the 150 mental patients in hospital. Thus he had the opportunity to examine many different diseases, and to form a collection of pathological specimens. He was a lecturer on morbid anatomy and emphasized the importance of anatomical investigations. Schroeder van der Kolk was the first to discover that tubercular pulmonary tissue is easily recognized by the presence of elastic threads in the sputum. DSB Vol. XII, p. 223-5; Hirsch / H.III, S582; Waller 5369. Bookseller Inventory # M10404
