Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. Hard Cover. Good/Good. Sixth Printing. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 318 p. Index. More than 150 drawings by Van Loon. Darkened area to pages 290-291 from laid-in newspaper article "Atlantic Steamers." Spine just beginning to crack in several places. Edge wear to cover. Dust jacket soiled, scuffed, tiny edge pieces missing. On inside of DJ is a full-color map of the world drawn by Van Loon, showing history of discovery and explorations, and suitable for framing. This is no conventional history of ships. It is not only a history of navigation from the treetrunks of the Australian aborigines to the modern ocean liner. It is the story of the way, frequently the inhuman way, in which sailors have lived and been treated during the last seven thousand years. Thus it is as much a the story of sailors as of their homes. It touches on fields as diverse as history, geography, ballistics, naval tactics, gastronomy, mythology, art, exploration, armaments, philology, and meteorology. Seller Inventory # 551
