About this Item
3 leaves, pages [1], 2 171, [3] pages of advertisements. 195 x 120 mm. Original blind stamped board. Spine expertly repaired by a master restorer and book binder. Pages 156 to 160 includes a transcription, with some Hebrew, of the circular against the shokhet (ritual slaughterer) Goldman, with McCaul?s anti Semitic statements on the subject of kosher meat etc. Mccaul was a missionary to the Jews and a professor of Hebrew and Rabbinical Judaism at King?s College, London. In 1821 he was recruited to work for the London Jews? Society and he established a mission in Poland which was still active on the eve of World War II. Offered the appointment as the first Protestant bishop in Jerusalem in 1841 he convinced the LJS to choose a Jewish apostate for the job. They found one in Michael Solomon Alexander. McCaul supported the Reform movement in Anglo Jewry, realizing that it is much closer to Christianity. He may have intuitively realized that a reform Jew is likely to end up with Christian grandchildren. McCauls love for Hebrew does not free him from of prejudice against the People of the Book. On page 17 he writes: . . . ?With all their shrewdness in worldly dealings, and all their genius and acuteness in scholastic argumentation, they are a credulous and superstitious people in the highest degree.?.
