About this Item
"The large, empty spaces in the interior of the African continent reflect a shift in the cartographic representation of unknown areas on maps. Prior to the late 18th century, geographic "blank spots" were often filled in with spurious information, elaborate decorations, or large title cartouches. Here, John Pinkerton has elected to leave much of the interior blank, rather than speculate or distract the audience. Apart from huge areas labeled "unknown parts", a large portion of the eastern coastline notes that there is no fresh water for an area nearly 700 miles long, reinforcing the notion that Africa was an untamed, harsh place. Only four areas are shown in any detail; the Cape Colony (British), modern day Angola (Portugal), Madagascar (French) and modern day Mozambique (Portugal) - clearly reflecting the colonial intentions of major European powers. An early depiction of Lake Malawi (spelled Maravi) can be seen in the north, while towards the center of the map old handwritten notes mark the spot "Great lake discovered here, 1849." This likely references the discovery of Lake Ngami by the famous Dr. David Livingstone after crossing the Kalahari Desert." Sheet Width (in) 22.25 Sheet Height (in) 32.25 Condition Description Several areas of staining and discoloration in the margins, away from the image. A few minor spots of foxing within the map itself, near the centerfold. Remains in excellent condition, printed on thick paper with original hand color. Seller Inventory # 1208
