About this Item

Thick Octavo. . xxvi, 102p. F.W. Farrar, the celebrated scholar who was personal chaplain to Queen Victoria and friend of Charles Darwin, has written an important introduction. An exquisite find binding issued in 1910 to Malcolm Andrew Graham Yooll shortly before his 12th birthday. Bookplate of Edinburgh Academy reads: First Prize, Class 2B in all subjects. The recipient went on to become a physician surgeon in the Royal Navy, marrying the remarkable Betty Graham (Yooll) just before World War II. He served with great honor and left the Navy iin 1945 to take over a medical practice in South Wales. In the Edinburgh Gazette there are two news items in 1947 and 1954 writing that he violated the Dangerous Drug Regulations and was forbidden to issue that class of medications. He died in 1967 with a cloud over his rather remarkable career that included parties at Buckingham Palace while he detested the poetry of John Betjeman. Beautiful stamping on original polished calf with the Edinburgh's Academy motto in Greek translated as Education and Wisdom and Virtue. On the front cover is the Latin: hoc ingenii feliciteiter exculti proemium donaverunt which is roughly rendered as: This prize [spelled here: Proemium] is happily presented for his superior performance. Raised bands with compartments full gilt decorated, brown morocco spine label gilt, marbled endpapers with matching endpapers. Bookseller Inventory # 018559
