Book Description New York: Theatre Arts, Inc., 1929. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 4to, boards, title and author stamped in white on upper cover, as issued, spine in need of re-backing, color frontispiece, 22pp. + 48 plates. An altogether delightful visual production, whose plates - drawings, elevations, cross-sections, concepts, theatrical set designs - fully reflect the author's distinguished manner, which, in retrospect, has come to epitomize him as the Prime Mover behind the American Art Deco style. Today, Urban may also be remembered as the architect for our current SOUTHERN WHITE HOUSE - Palm Beach FL's Mar-a-Lago complex - but the man's creative output, over the course of his sixty-one years (1872-1933), was enormous. In fact, a separate gallery has been devoted to his work in the Oct. 2017-Jan. 2018 exhibition of the WIENER WERKSTATTE at the Neue Galerie in New York, serving to document just how substantial were his achievements. Born in Vienna, his first commission, in Cairo, was won at age 19, and he came to America in 1911 as Art Director of the Boston Opera Company, then went to New York City in 1914, where he remained, working for the Met and for the Ziegfeld Follies. This book can easily be viewed as Urban's comprehensive view of theatre design and how he made it manifest in concepts for a Ziegfeld Theatre, the Paramount Theatre, a Metropolitan Opera, the Jewish Art Theatre, and The Music Centre. Its front endpaper is ink inscribed "Arthur C. Holden & Assoc. | Dec. 14, 1929." Holden had gone to Cornell's graduate school, trained at McKim Mead & White, formed his own firm, and worked with Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949 on the Guggenheim. His life was long (1890-1993) and productive. First Edition. A good+ copy. Seller Inventory # E-52/5
