Small 4to. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering, dust jacket. ix, 156pp. Frontispiece. Near fine/near fine. A superbly tight and fresh first edition of this uncommon study by a prominent New York attorney and notable Lincoln scholar (1891-1960) -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Barondess ("Ben"), 1p, 4½" X 6¼", n.p., 6 October 1953. Addressed to Arnold (Arnold F. Gates, 1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War researcher). Near fine. In bold, thick fountain pen black, Barondess tells his friend, who was an officer of the New York Civil War Round Table and long-time editor of their newsletter: "Keep this, not only for its biographical data, but because you may find you have occasion to use it when Boyd leaves N.Y. and the C.W.R.T. next January, for good. The printer in Charleston sent it to me, without Boyd's knowledge." Boyd B. Stutler (1889-1970) was a preeminent West Virginia scholar of John Brown and the Civil War. Also tipped in is an 8" X 5" proof copy (on coarse newsprint paper) for a small advertisement for "Three Lincoln Masterpieces." An unusually handsome copy of this title with exceptional letter.
