About this Item

This book is a BCE edition and is in exceptionally nice condition. The book is in as new, unread condition, and the jacket has NO tears or chips, with only very minor wear at the spine ends. It also has wear at the flap end tips, and wear along the front fold edge that is through the red color but not through the paper, and there is a very small wear spot of the same type on the rear fold edge, and a tiny spot on the front fold edge. All this sounds worse than it shows, but we believe in no surprises, and this jacket looks real nice, the jacket is now in a brodart protective plastic sleeve. We ship in cardboard boxes, and guarantee satisfaction. Bookseller Inventory # 22394

About this title

Synopsis:

When Carl Lee Hailey guns down the hoodlums who have raped his ten-year-old child, the people of Clanton see it as a crime of blood and call for his acquittal. But when extremists outside Clanton hear that a black man has killed two white men, they invade the town, determined to destroy anything and anyone that opposes their sense of justice. Jake Brigance has been hired to defend Hailey. It's the kind of case that can make or break a young lawyer. But in the maelstrom of Clanton, it is also the kind of case that could get a young lawyer killed. 'The best thriller writer alive' - Ken Follett, "Evening Standard". 'Grisham is a natural storyteller' - "Daily Telegraph". 'A giant of the thriller genre' - "Time Out". 'Leaves one eager for more' - "Spectator".

Review:

With a chillingly calm, even delivery, Michael Beck, a regular Grisham reader (The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury), turns the narrative of this disturbing tale of racism, ignorance, and brutality into an almost visceral experience. "Cobb strung a length of quarter inch ski rope over a limb ... he grabbed her and put the noose around her head." The story is frighteningly believable and expertly crafted around a horrible crime and the tragic consequences that follow. At times, Beck's character voices can be distracting, but his efforts are generally applied to good effect, adding another level of tension to this already suspenseful look at a small Mississippi town's struggle for justice. (Running time: 17 hours, 12 cassettes) --George Laney
