About this title

Synopsis:

Traditionally, women who chose to live out roles assigned to them succeeded at being good, but being successful meant developing a set of qualities (the feminine) that were less valued within society. However, if women chose to develop qualities valued by society (the masculine), they were deviating from their normal behaviors and were subject to criticism or censure for not acting appropriately, i.e., not being good. It began as a book group, developed into a forum of women, and from there grew into a support group of strangers who became friends, walking together into unexpected places. The support groups, Touching Your Lifethread and Revaluing The Feminine, led participants through a process of discovery of themselves as good women, and an examination of roles into which they had put and found themselves. The women discuss a variety of questions together: Who do people say I am? What makes them think that? What does it mean to the rest of my world? The answers provide a unique insight into the lives of modern women. Their stories and case studies provide the reader with an understanding of the process of psychospiritual change that the good women of the workshops have willingly undertaken. The author brings her feminist perspective and spiritual training together as an academic to examine the issues surrounding the lives of good women at varying degrees of self-awareness. Through this study, she provides a strong argument for a new approach to traditional psychology that embraces feminine and spiritual values as an integral part of counseling.
