Book Description New York. Rimington & Hooper. 1930., 1930. Folio. 32cm, ix,[12],80p., No. 123 of 377 numbered copies designed and printed by Richard W. Ellis at the Georgian Press. With a portrait frontispiece after the original of 1630, facsimile reproductions of the original title leaf and the folding engraved plate, full in full linen, with paper label, beveled boards, a fine copy. (ds1) Smith, one of the last of the Elizabethan adventurers, was leader of the first permanent English settlement in America at Jamestown, Virginia. He was an important man in the colony and because of his friendly relations with the Indians was able buy corn which made it possible for the colonist to survive the first winters. Once Smith was captured by unfriendly Indians. According to the story he told later, he was about to be killed when Pocahontas, the chief's twelve-year-old daughter, begged that he be saved. He was responsible for getting London to send settlers who would be farmers, fishermen and workers rather than gold-seekers, which led to the building of a successful colony. In 1614 he returned from England where he had been recuperating after an injury, to explore and map the coast of New England. He wrote many books about his adventures. John Smith died in 1631. Book. Smith, Capt. John

Used Hardcover Quantity Available: 1

Book Description Franklin Press, Richmond, 1819. Full-Leather. Condition: Good. No Jacket. This is the first American edition of these two volumes, with frontispieces, engraved coats of arms. The map and 2 separate plates are not present; the frontispiece bust of Smith is present and in very good condition. These are the original flamed sheep covers with red lettered labels on the spines. Covers and bindings worn (but reasonably tight) with slight fire damage to head of volume two. Smith's "True Travels." were originally published in 1630. The "Generall Historie." was first published in London in 1624, and because of wide and varied interests has been reprinted many times over the years, with the Richmond edition the first in the USA. There is some light dampstaining to the upper gutter in volume two, for about the first 20 pages. Although Captain Smith was quite a self-promoter, his observations and writings still provided a great deal of valuable information. Generally a good set. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
