Tan printed wrappers. 3 by 5 inches. 64pp. Cover reads: "Brainard's Half-Dime Hand Books". Scarce early guide to New York with many warnings for travelers on criminal activities there. The chapter headings read: Peter Funk Shops; Patent-Safe Swindlers; Pick-Pockets, both sexes; Garrotters and Highwaymen and Gamblers and Gambling-Houses. This is probably the first edition of this work and contains no illustrations save for an ad for Lovejoy's Hotel on page 22. Later editions, published in Boston and New York, had illustrations. In any case it is very scarce. It is a well-worn copy with some staining to the front cover and some chipping to the spine. The rear cover is lacking on this copy. All of the pages are present and in good condition with some tanning and light spotting. Many of the pages (including the cover) are curled in the lower right corner. There is a faint owner's stamp at the foot of the last page. Seller Inventory # 10188
