[8pp], 89pp, [1], 336pp, [16] pages, Table and Catalogue of Books. Period style full calf binding by Courtland Benson, retaining original sprinkled calf boards. Elaborately tooled spine with decorations in compartments, raised bands, all according to the period. Contrasting title label. Except for some very minor handling marks on only a few leaves, and the occasional spotting, this is a remarkably clean copy, with pages crisp. "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer). Pages 200-219 contain an account of the false messiah Shabbetai Tsvi. Sir Paul Rycaut (1629-1700) was the leading authority of his day on the Ottoman Empire who spent seventeen years in Turkey. He was also the Secretary in the Turkish Embassy of Heneage Finch, Earl of Winchelsea, 1661; Fellow of the Royal Society, 1666; Consul of the Levant Company at Smyrna, [ Turkey ] 1667; He was Knighted 1685.
