Albert Charles Wratislaw (1862-1938), author of A Consul in the East, entered the British Levant Consular Service in 1883, serving in Crete, Basra, Tabriz, and Beirut, and later as a commissioner with the Turco-Persian Boundary Commission. He reports increased trade with "perhaps the most abundant" crop of dates on record. There is scope for more imports from Britain as business "is left in the hands of small native traders, for the British firms devote their energies almost exclusively to the export of dates, wool, grain, and liquorice root". Although the introduction of military weapons to Turkey was prohibited "there was for many years a brisk trade in them throughout Turkish Arabia. A cholera epidemic broke out among the date packers in 1899 and spread towards Baghdad. Seller Inventory # 5197
