About this Item

Pp. xxxiii, (iii), 240, 127 photographs and x-rays by the author as well as numerous diagrams. New dark blue rexine with gilt titles on spine and front board, lg 8vo. This is the first herpetology book written by Rose. Leonard Gill in the preface writes "Skilled professional men are not rare and many of them have hobbies, but there must be very few who have made such a notable thing of their hobby as Mr. Rose. The public for whom this book is written cannot be expected to appreciate all that has gone to the making of it; naturalists will understand something of it when I say that the amphibian and reptilian fauna of the Cape Peninsula is better known than that of almost any other similar-sized piece of country in the world, and that we owe this knowledge almost entirely to a few years of spare-time study by the author of this book." This book is quite scarce, it is not found in any OCLC-linked repository. Newspaper portrait of Rose mounted on rear side of frontis plate with the caption "Dr. Walter Rose, of Newlands, Cape, holds his pet leguaan." School prize label for Eileen Paine dated November 1930 is attached to the front endpaper. One page of the frontis matter is slightly browned, a tight, clean, near fine copy.
