Description:

Boards resist opening past 75 degrees -- fine; unread. Number line complete 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1; the first printing. Signed "Thomas Sowell," name only, in blue felt-tip to a special "Laissez Faire Books" bookplate attached to the FFE. Professor Sowell is brilliant and insightful, as usual. "Among the many other questions raised by the nebulous concept of 'greed' is why it is a term applied almost exclusively to those who want to earn more money or to keep what they have already earned -- never to those wanting to take other people's money in taxes or to those wishing to live on the largess dispensed from such taxation. No amount of taxation is ever described by the anointed as 'greed' on the part of the government. . . ." 305 pp. including index. This book will not be shipped to Western Connecticut addresses. Synopsis: Sowell presents a devastating critique of the mind-set behind the failed social policies of the past thirty years. Sowell sees what has happened during that time not as a series of isolated mistakes but as a logical consequence of a tainted vision whose defects have led to crises in education, crime, and family dynamics, and to other social pathologies. In this book, he describes how elites—the anointed—have replaced facts and rational thinking with rhetorical assertions, thereby altering the course of our social policy.

About the Author: THOMAS SOWELL has taught economics at Cornell, UCLA, Amherst, and other academic institutions, and his Basic Economics has been translated into six languages. He is currently a scholar in residence at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He has been published in both academic journals and such popular media as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes magazine, and Fortune, and he writes a syndicated column that appears in newspapers across the country.

Book Description Basic Books, New York, NY, 1995. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Basic Books, New York. 1995. Hardcover. First Printing by line number. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Near Fine: bumped lower front tip. No DJ. Black boards with tan cloth overlay on spine with black lettering on spine. 305 pp 8vo. Those who accept this vision are deemed to be not merely factually correct, but morally on a higher plane. Put differently, those who disagree with the prevailing vision are seen as being not merely in error, but in sin. These are not mere debating tactics; people are never more sincere than when they assume their own moral superiority; this can be a fatal talent, when it supplies the crucial insulation from reality behind many historic catastrophes especially when those assumptions nor their corollaries are generally confronted with demands for empirical evidence. A clean and very presentable copy. Seller Inventory # 003863
