Commons (1862-1945) was an influential American economist and a founder of institutional economics, which examines how institutions like laws, unions, and organizations shape economic behavior. He played a key role in labor economics, advocating for worker protections such as collective bargaining, minimum wage laws, and unemployment insurance. His interdisciplinary approach integrated economics, law, and sociology to address real-world economic issues. One of Commons' major contributions was his multi-volume "History of Labour in the United States" (1918), co-authored with others. This work traces the development of the U.S. labor movement, highlighting the role of labor unions, strikes, and legal changes that shaped worker rights. It remains a foundational text in labor history. Commons also influenced New Deal-era reforms, including Social Security and unemployment insurance, and his seminal works, such as "Legal Foundations of Capitalism" and "Institutional Economics", cemented his legacy in labor and institutional economics.
