U.S. Marine Corps in WWII Extensive photo Album of 385 photos spanning the world in Japan, the South Pacific, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Greenland. Some featured photos include candid photos of President Franklin Roosevelt, General MacArthur, and Admiral Nimitz and many Official Marine Corps mid-battle press photos of The Pacific and European Theater, U.S. ships, life of local natives in the South Pacific and North Africa, soldiers with their family, and scenic images from each place. Includes 364 black and white silver gelatin photographs plus 21 real photo postcards. Photo sizes range 1.75" x 2.75" to 3.5" x 4.5". In original tobacco leather photo album. The Amphibious Corps, Atlantic Fleet, consisted of the 1st Infantry Division and the 1st Marine Division, while the Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet, consisted of the 3rd Infantry Division and the 2nd Marine Division. Many photos show U.S. Marines in native villages and towns of Namur Island, Peleliu, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tarawa, Cape Gloucester, Saipan, North Africa, and even Alaska. Some official photos from the Marine Corps, with printed captions; "Marines take cover in invasion of Tarawa", "Actual landing operations on South Sea Island", "Two rear gunners in Guadalcanal bomb shelter". These images depict behind the scene images of soldiers mid-fire in battle with the Japanese, hiding out in foxholes, marching through tropical marshes, stationed on base and in lookout towers, geared up on beaches,and inside tankers and ships. Some more morbid shots show devastated buildings and victims of war on both the side of the Japanese and the Americans. Photos in the South Pacific show various natives in their traditional dress such as grass skirts, beaded necklaces, and headdresses. Some bare tattoos custom to their culture. On July 26, 1944, the year that President Franklin Roosevelt made his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, he met with General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz in Hawaii to settle the dispute on the advancement of the South and Central Pacific. 29 photos documents this important historical event in Hawaii, FDR, MacArthur and Nimitz shaking hands and in the midst of war strategy planning. This meeting was called the Pacific Strategy Conference, Roosevelt favored General MacArthur's decision to reoccupy the Philippines and exposed Japan's air forces to severe attack. Also include 18 photos of official United States Ships with their names, followed by small scale official press release photos of soldiers in uniform and camouflage preparing or in the midst of battle. Included are couple loose photographs and handwritten greeting cards. Images and text are crisp and clear. Also includes paper items like an official invitation for the commanding officers, and crew of the U.S.S. Pine Island (AV12) with handwritten date "April 26 1945" with the schedule of events and roster of officers inside. Also included is his Engineer special brigade shoulder sleeve insignia.
