About this Item

A relatively attractive and hard to find copy of the true first edition, first printing, with Scribner's "A" on the copyright page and no seal. DJ is first state, with NO photographer's credit ("Arnold -- Sun Valley) on the rear of the DJ showing the young Hemingway typing. Small pieces missing at top and bottom of spine and light chipping along edges. Topstained pages and deckled edges. The pages are clean and unmarked. The binding is clean and tight. Price of $2.75 is present on unclipped DJ, with Canby blurb at the top. Previous owner's name in pencil at top of first endpaper and light browning near the spine, as is true in most copies of this novel. The Scribner's "A" is present on the copyright page. 471 pages. This volume is bound in publisher's full oatmeal boards, with black lettering on the red panels on the spine and the author's stamped facsimile signature on the front cover. {ref: Hanneman A18a}. Note to prospective buyers: There has been a debate in previous years over whether the Scribner's seal should also be present on the copyright page. Other Scribner's books published around the same time such as "To Have and Have Not," "The Yearling," "The Dark Horse," "The Last Tycoon," and "Cross Creek" all have both the "A" and the seal. However, no one has produced a copy of this novel with both the "A" and Scribner's seal, and no one has come forward to say they have even seen such a copy. So the jury is NOT out. Beware that there is a facsimile edition of this title, with some sellers not noting the distinction. This copy is a TRUE FIRST EDITION WITH THE TRUE FIRST STATE OF THE DJ. Hanneman A18a.
