Small 4to. Red cloth, pictorial dust jacket. x, 503pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Good plus/good plus. Binding rather edgeworn and rubbed, with endpapers age toned; jacket edgeworn and rubbed . A tight and quite decent first edition of this popular study in which the chemist/Lincoln scholar touts his since-discredited assassination theory. "More exciting than any fictional thriller," entices the sensationalistic front jacket panel, "appalling in its implications." This copy bears choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a nice Typed Note Signed from Eisenschiml, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Chicago, IL, 29 August 1944. Addressed to Forest H. Sweet, the pioneering autograph dealer from Battle Creek, Michigan. On his personal letterhead, Eisenschiml pays for an autograph purchase: "I am enclosing check for $45.00 which I think is the correct price for the Crook statement. I consider it a very beautiful item." Signed simply "Otto." Eisenschiml was likely acquiring a document from Lincoln's well-known bodyguard William H. Crook, although Union general George Crook is a remote possibility. Eisenschiml (1880-1963) was an American chemist and historian and this 1937 study is his best known work, though he penned a number of other Civil War titles. Bookseller Inventory # 41114
