About this Item
William Jenks (1778-1866) was a noted scholar who, after graduating from Harvard in 1797, served as a clergyman before serving as Professor of Oriental Languages at Bowdoin College. He founded the American Oriental Society. The collection are letters written to him primarily in the early decades of the 19th century. Nine of the letters are to him and show an interesting picture of New England in the early era of the 19th century. 1) 1 ALS, Alden Bradford to Jenks, January 7, 1806. notes he has sent a copy of the Wincasset Paper [no copies have survived from this period]; (2) 2 ALS, Samuel Jenks to William Jenks (his brother) 4 page bifolium, August 30, 1807 (Nantucket). writes of family and charge against him for $200. He does already own land, and is awaiting payment from Whaling (presumably where he will earn $1500-$2,000.; (3) ALS, Leonard Woods to Wm. Jenks, 4 page bifolium, October 4, 1810. Andover. Leonard Woods and Samuel Jenks had both been students at Harvard in 1797. laments situation of applicants. Much on piety in Maine, Warm family greetings.; (4) 1 ALS, Leonard Hydes to Jenks, October 21, 1817, Boston. Notes conversation with Henry Homes, founder of Boston's Park Street Church, served with Jenks on the American Temperance Society. Discussion on minister's salaries and negotiation. [note, from a later letter we find the $2500 per annum requested was lowered to $2,000]; (5) 2 ALS, Bifolium. Leonard Hydes to Jenks, November 3, 1817, Boston. The reduction of salary notes also must include rent for school room, benches, etc. Suggests that the affluent leaders are more concerned with money than the spiritual aspect; (6) 4 ALS, bifolium, November 23, 1818. Leonard Hydes to Jenks. Writes regarding Sullivan's History of the Marines (?) and Lavater's Journals [presumably, Johann Lavater (1741-1801). Writes vaguely of trying scenes in house of Capt. Jones (?). notes a Mr. Randall appears to have been badly wounded. Much on what sound like typical evangelical piety of the era. Notes Johnson Kates, a graduate of Bowdoin, to be ordained on coming Wednesday; (7) 2 ALS bifolium. Bath, February 18, 1821. Leonard Bath to Jenks. Dr. Stockbridge contemplates leaving town tomorrow at an early hour. Says he cannot yet give full account of the sale of his books though Mr. Prichard may have communicated particulars, the ones from Boston amounted to $453; (8) 3 ALS, bifolium, June 4, 1822. John Taylor to Jenks, writes that he wrote of the opportunity he had not known that the laws of Massachusetts forbade hiring of foreigners, he hoped it was no amiss to approve the young man, whom I recommended, as an assistant instructor in the African school since he is a foreigner having been born in London but not resided in the US for five months and notes postal rates 18 1/2 cents; (9) 2 ALS, bifolium, Bath, November 23, 1822. Zinas Hynes to Jenks. discusses medical lectures in Boston, will be able to speak of Mrs. Stockbridge's last days, and also secret occurrences of affair here. He has some business dealings but aware they may get in the way of his spiritual call. (10), 1 ALS.
