About this title

Synopsis:

Basking in the recent success of The Thin Man, William Powell and Myrna Loy stumble onto a situation so typically Hollywood that only the real-life incarnation of Nick and Nora Charles could take the case. A Hollywood madam publicizes that she's in need of money, effectively putting the squeeze on many of Hollywood's leading men by implying that soon she might be desperate enough to sell the contents of her "little black book."
A book like that could do a lot of damage in a town where Louis B. Mayer is not above exercising the morals clauses in his actors' contracts to suit his own schemes, where gossip spreads faster than you can say Louella Parsons, and where celebrity secrets are a valuable commodity - or a motive for murder.
William Powell and Myrna Loy, the silver screen's most charming sleuthing couple, bring their roles as Nick and Nora Charles back to life alongside George Baxt's fictional investigating trio of Herb Villon, Hazel Dickson, and Jim Mallory. Once again, Baxt delivers a witty, engaging mystery depicting Hollywood in its heyday as only he can.

From Booklist:

In this eleventh entry in Baxt's movie-themed murder series, William Powell and Myrna Loy slide easily from their onscreen romps as Nick and Nora Charles to "real life" detection. Claire Young, Hollywood's madam to the stars, has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer. To collect a sizable nest egg for her young son, she leaks to the gossip columnists that she's kept a list of her notable clients and that she may have to write her memoirs to earn some money. Claire's risky game of not-so-subtle blackmail leads directly to the murder of her two closest friends. Nick and Nora (excuse me, Bill and Myrna) invite themselves into the case on the strength of their celluloid crime-fighting experience and Myrna's impeccable intuition. Baxt's caricature of the notoriously histrionic Louis B. Mayer will amuse all movie buffs, and his acid-tipped takes on Gable and Chaplin will have their ghosts looking for libel lawyers. This is an utterly unbelievable but thoroughly entertaining romp through a Hollywood that never really existed, except perhaps in its own mind. George Needham

Store Description

Member: Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, Southern New England Antiquarian Booksellers. "One of the finest in N.E. (&) the premier used book shop on Cape Cod." - Used Book Lover's Guide. We are a general used and rare book shop with about 70,000 volumes. Located half way between Falmouth and Hyannis (4632 Falmouth Rd, Rte 28), we are named in honor of the famous colonial era printer and philanthropist, founder (1812) of the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester. We started in Worcester in 1969, and moved to the Cape in 1990. Impressed with architectural craftmanship, in Worcester we were stewards and renewers of a decorative Queen Anne Victorian. Here on the Cape we take care of the newest (1860) Crocker family home in the village of Cotuit, part of the town of Barnstable: a tall peaked Italianate Victorian now painted pink and four other colors. The owner's training has included work in four libraries and apprenticeship with bookseller Irving Ephraim (1908-1989) of Worcester who began his own career during the depression. Able assistants have always been and known the meaning of 'book people.' Remembering with fondness Mr. E. and the enormous influence of our home town librarians, we try to continue their tradition of service.
