8vo. pp. xiii, [1], 345, [1]. With seven plates including the frontispiece and 1 fold-out chart. Several charts are also included with the text. Bound in blue publisher’s cloth. A tight copy, with miniscule rubbing to the extremities and light bumping at the corner tips. The dust-jacket (price-clipped) is age-toned and shows chipping, small tears and general wear to the extremities. The jacket also contains spots of rubbing and staining. Interior pages are clean. A number of leaves are unopened. "Mr. Ewen has examined the indictments for witchcraft in England during a period of almost two hundred years, from 1559 to 1736, and here presents them. The nature of the persecution of the supposed devil worshipers in now made clear The witch was hanged, not burned; there were less than one thousand executions in the two hundred years; the terror of the witches was Elizabieth, not James" [from the dust jacket].
