Number 911 of 1,075 copies, signed by the illustrator on the frontis and by the publisher on a separate leaf. Finely bound by Brentano's in full crushed turquoise morocco with gilt to spine and boards. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. A touch of sunning to spines, and a few nicks to the spine ends but overall a lovely, Near Fine set. A pleasing set containing the best short stories, poetry, and prose works of O. Henry, an American writer "whose tales romanticized the commonplace -- in particular the life of ordinary people in New York City. His stories expressed the effect of coincidence on character through humor, grim or ironic, and often had surprise endings" (Britannica). Though he began his career as a newspaper humorist, his reputation as an author became more widespread following his conviction and imprisonment for embezzlement of bank funds; it was during that time that his authorship became a means for supporting his daughter Margaret. His reputation and popularity continued to grow after his release, and his output remained prolific until he succumbed to ill health due to alcoholism. Near Fine. Seller Inventory # 5241
