About this Item

This is the complete set of Twain's writings in 37 volumes, including the 2-volume autobiography, bound in finely woven blue cloth spines with printed paper labels; in buff-colored paper-covered boards. "This definitive edition consists of one thousand twenty-four sets, the first volume of each bearing the original autograph signatures of Mark Twain No. 553." "The special fly-leaf was signed by Mark Twain in 1906 in anticipation of the present definitive edition of his works" signed by Albert Bigelow Paine (underscored); the next tipped-in plate is signed by "SL. Clemens / Mark Twain (underscored)". "Deckle-edged paper with splendid photogravure frontispieces and plates throughout. Many pages unopened. With all 37 dust jackets present. One jacket has a small piece missing at the bottom of the rear inside flap; all other jackets are complete with light wear, edge-rubbing and a light stain here and there. All the volumes are very good plus to near fine, though there are occasional bumps to the corners, blemishes, a small hole at the bottom of one volume, purportedly caused by an errant BB, a touch of light white spotting here and there to the spines of a handful of volumes, a wrinkled section of a few pages at the top of another volume, and occasional shelfwear to some of the favored tomes; but all the volumes are complete with their splendid plates, labels, and dust jackets. And while the dust jackets are basically heavy plain gray paper, their spines are clearly printed in black and red lettering, identifying the titles and volumes therein. Illustrated with photogravure frontispieces and plates (including portraits) after E. W. Kemble, Howard Pyle, Dan Beard, Peter Newell, A. B. Frost, and others. With notes of appreciation and commentary by W. D. Howells, Booth Tarkington, G. K. Chesterton, and many others. A very handsome, complete set of the Definitive Edition of Twain's Works with the Signatures of Mark Twain, S.L. Clemens, and Albert Bigelow Paine. In addition there is a signed letter of provenance from the original owner describing the history of the books and their journey. First Edition signed/limited complete works.
